History
1963
Pyrethrum was first introduced in Rwanda in 1963 by private growers, initially on a small scale. That same year, the government recognized its potential and sought to promote large-scale production.
1972
The Rwandan government, in partnership with UNIDO, established a processing plant in Musanze for the production of crude pyrethrum extract. This joint government-UNIDO initiative transformed Rwanda's pyrethrum industry, enabling the country to capture more of the value chain by processing the crop locally before export.
1978
the association was merged with the processing plant to form OPYRWA (Office du Pyrethrum du Rwanda), a government-owned company.
2000
the company was privatized and sold off to Rwanda investors who renamed it Horizon Sopyrwa.
